The 8th Nagasaki Dr.Nagai Peace Memorial Prize awarded to Professor Christoph Reiners.

The Nagasaki Dr. Nagai Peace Memorial Prize is awarded to recognize the work of individuals and/or organizations both domestically and overseas, for their contributions towards developing or improving research for the medical treatment of people affected by atomic bombs or radiation exposure. Through this improvement in the welfare of those affected by radiation, this further contributes towards the goal of achieving world peace.

Since the Nagasaki Dr.Nagai Peace Memorial Prize was set up as part of the activities of NASHIM in 1995, the 8th award ceremony was held in Nagasaki city on March 15th. This year’s recipient, Professor Christoph Reiners who attended from Germany was awarded the diploma, trophy (the light of life) and the extra prizes from Makimoto, chairman of NASHIM.

Last September and December, the Nagasaki Dr. Nagai Peace Memorial Prize Selection Committee engaged in a lively exchange of opinions to select the well-qualified person for the award.

Professor Christoph Reiners has been ceaselessly devoted to the study of nuclear medicine since he graduated from the medical school at the University of Wurzburg, one of the oldest universities in Germany. He has also contributed to the medical application of radiation, especially to promote diagnosis and therapy using radioisotopes, and introduced the three-dimensional ultrasound diagnosis of thyroid diseases in Belarus. This leads to advancements in the early detection of initial onset and recurrence as well as in the clinical treatment of radiation-induced thyroid cancer.
Furthermore, Prof.Reiners invited 247 children who were in the advanced stages of perpetually recurring and metastasizing thyroid cancer in Belarus which was the most severely affected country to Germany and provided them with proper medical care and succeeded in achieving remarkable therapeutic results. He was awarded the Francisca Scorina Order from the President of Belarus for his efforts. So In recognition of his contributions, He was awarded this time. Academic experts and scholars from related fields including the governor of Nagasaki prefecture and mayor of Nagasaki city had attended to this ceremony. And professor Reiners said strongly in the acceptance speech that he appreciated the cooperation by Japan government, support organizations and researchers until then, and would constantly devote to the treatment of thyroid cancer increased after the Chernobyl accident.
The celebration was held after the ceremony, all the participants had celebrated the award of Professor, Reiners.
