3.Major Achievements and Activities:

  • 1990:Establishment of the Belarussian Research and Practical Thyroid Tumor Centre in order to develop medical treatment for the victims of radiation exposure after the Chemobyl accident and for the research of radiation- induced thyroid cancer.
  • 1992:Firstly reported the increase of childhood thyroid cancer after the Chemobyl accident. (Nature v.359)
  • 1996:Development and introduction of techniques of radical surgical treatment of children with thyroid cancer. Establishment of bank oftumor tissues for future research and investigation.
  • 1998:Proved the necessity to apply preventive neck lymphodissection for radiation-induced thyroid cancer.

4. Main Reasons for Selection
Dr. Demidchik is a well-known and world-famous thyroid surgeon, who has devoted himself for a long time to patients with thyroid cancer, especially children after the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant Accident and even during the critical period of the catastrophe in the former USSR. He has contributed a lot to establishing the Minsk Thyroid Cancer Center in the Republic of Belarus. Dr. Demidchik has fIrst reported the rapid increase of childhood thyroid cancer in the international scientific joumal, NATURE, in 1992 and coordinated many international projects on Chemobyl Thyroid Cancer, these achievements have been highly evaluated in the world. More specifically, he has introduced and maintained successfully radioisotope therapy, I-131 , to patients with operated childhood thyroid cancer.
Dr. Demidchik is of novel character and highly respected. He is now 76 years-old but still supervises actively in the frontline of thyroid surgery for radiation-exposed patients.
Therefore, Dr. Demidchik has been highly evaluated as the most suitable winner for the 4th Annual Nagasaki Dr. Nagai Peace Memorial Prize.

  • 1962-:Started cytogenetic studies on leukemia patients found in atomic bomb survivors
  • 1969-:Revealed morphologic and cytogenetic abnormalities of the bone marrow cells and unique fimctions of the serum of the healthy atomic bomb survivors.
  • 1972-:Found characteristic findings of genetic instabilities of the exposed cells from both healthy survivors and leukemia patients in chromosome and molecular genetic levels.
  • 1988-:Appealed".Abolition 2000" as a member of Japan Branch of lnternational Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (lPPNW).
  • 1992-1999:Supported the acceptance of foreign trainees fiom the countries which had experienced accidental radiation exposure, as the chief executive secretary( 1993-1997) and the Chief director( 1998-1999) of Hiroshima lnternational Council for Medical Care of the Radiation-Exposed (HICARE)

4. Main Reasons for Selection
Dr. Kamada has devoted himself to medical research on the health effects of atomic bombing since 1962 at the Institute for Nuclear Medicine and Biology, Hiroshima University, and found the presence of morphologic and cytogenetic abnormalities in the bone marrow of atomic bomb-exposed survivors, who seem to be healthy at first glance, for long periods. He has clarified the difference between radiation-induced leukemia and naturally occurring leukemia,which has been highly regarded as one of the top researches in the world for establishing an academic concept of leukemia development.
In contrast, Dr. Kamada has contributed a lot through his social activities as an acting member of the Japan Branch 0f lnternational Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear, War (IPPNW) and also as the chairperson of the Hiroshima International Council for Medical Care of the Radiation-Exposed (HICARE). Dr. Kamada has been heavily involved in medical care for Atomic bomb survivors and in a public campaign for enlightenment of the health effects of radiation on humans.
On the above main reasons, therefore, Dr. Kamada has been highly evaluated as the most suitable wirner for the 4th Annual Nagasaki Dr. Nagai Peace Memorial Prize.
